won’s practice begins from the unknowable, the ghostly and residual forces that disturb clarity. Working across moving image, installation, and performance, she rarely lets an image sit still or clean. It gets projected onto thin, unstable surfaces, or set inside frames and walls until it becomes part of the architecture.

Much of this reaching grows out of Korean history: its wars and purges, and the violent speed with which the country tears itself down and builds again. But the work never stays national. She questions how history that isn’t yours can still reach you and implicate you, and whether feeling your way across that distance is even honest.

At its core, her practice is about visibility and the power that governs it: what is granted the right to appear, what is kept from sight, and who decides. She looks for the answer in material things, in the worn surface of a building, a strip of found footage, a body feelings its way through a room, treating each as a place that holds on to what ‘official’ memory is willing to let slip. What she is after is never the finished picture but closer to searching, or remembering.
